At the south end of the narrow elite precinct was the mound associated with the residence of the chiefly family and at the north end, there was a platform mound supporting the mortuary or charnel house for the chieftains and their relatives. Walls running on top of the chiefly mound and a gateway at the base of the mound provided chiefly access to the public ceremonial ground. Additionally, archaeologists have located two other gateways to the plaza, including an odd Z-shaped entranceway (Figure 4.17). Outside access to the elite zone was at the northeast corner of the town, where narrow wing gates led to the river and agricultural fields just north of the town.
